Conservation in Cuba

These are the guys that Joanna went to Indonesia with last summer and she recommends them, it was great fun and they organise everything

Operation Wallacea run a series of biological conservation expeditions over 20 sites across the world. One of the projects we are running takes place in Cuba, where we take groups of school students and university volunteers to take part in Marine research. Prior to taking part in the research they will need to complete their BSAC Ocean Diver training.

They are looking for BSAC Dive instructors who would be available for 5,4 or 2 week projects during July and August to assist with dive training on the Isle of Youth. As an instructor you will be teaching Open Water dives as well as supervising/leading research dives. All food and accommodation will be covered for the length of your contract as well as a wage of £105 per week.

Please visit www.opwall.com for more information. Look forward to hearing from you.

Don't forget the AGM -- and HSAC bring and buy sale

The Annual General Meeting is on Monday 19th April. In addition, after the meeting we will have a bring and buy sale for dive gear. It's the perfect way for new members to get their first bits of kit (with lots of divers on hand to tell you if you're getting a good deal) or for less new members to clear some cupboard and garage space. Bring along spare kit you want to get rid of and wallets.

OCTOPUSH!

Next Monday is Octopush again. Let's hope it's as exciting as last week's nail-biting game.

Dive season is coming - sort your kit !

With the season coming up (quite tired of winter now thanks), it's a good idea to get your kit in to a dive shop for a service in good time before the start of the season, as it can take a couple of weeks.

If you need a recommendation for a shop, the club uses:
http://www.subaqua.co.uk/Collins_and_Chambers

Similarly, please use the weekly pool sessions to try out new and recently serviced kit and to make sure everything still works ok before the dive season starts. This is good practice for safe diving and we encourage all members to do so before open water diving. Many divers in the club have had trouble diving with kit for the first time in open water - don't be one of them!

Training

If you need to take an exam next week let Richard know.

Additionally, instructors can help out if members want to refresh any rusty skills or training - get in touch with Richard & Georgia if so.

** BUMPER TRAINING EDITION **

The AGM - have your say!

The AGM will be held on Monday 19th April - mark the date in your diaries. This meeting is open to all members and is where the club's committee for the next year will be elected, as well as being an opportunity for members to discuss anything they like with the committee and the club as a whole. Venue and time will be confirmed nearer the date, as well as details of committee positions and how to stand for election. Any queries in the meantime should be directed to a member of the committee.

New Year, New Skills!

New Year is a time for new training. Richard will be making a bulk order of training packs to save on postage so let him know if you want to move on to a new course. The training packs page is here:
http://www.bsac.com/shop.asp?section=1423&sectionTitle=BSAC+Diver+Traini...

If you're coming from another agency (SSAC, PADI etc) you need the "crossover pack". If you're already trained with BSAC and are wanting to start your Sports Diver, Dive Leader or Advanced Diver course then you will need the Student Notes pack (or possibly the Notes and Manual pack for Dive Leader) let Richard know exactly which pack you will need and he will order them all together.

Training in Swanage

The first training dive of the year will be in Swanage on 8th and 9th May. It's important for trainees to get signed up now so that we can be sure to have enough instructors arranged and arrange what training will be done. So, if you're just starting your course or you have just got a few things to get signed off then make sure you sign up with Anne for this one as soon as possible and let Richard and Georgia know about any training you need.

Exams on 22nd February

Why not get those pesky exams out of the way before the season starts. Anyone who needs to take an exam for their current course should let Richard and Georgia know which exam they wish to take. Exams will be in the back room of the Approach pub from 7pm or poolside from 8:30 (during Octopush though) or even after the pool in the pub. Lots of chances to sit the exam so don't miss out.

We should also put an reminder in the next newsletter that people should put their kit in to be services now, as it can take a few weeks to get it all done.

Club T-shirts

Rob has found 4 club t-shirts from the last batch following a sort out. There are 3 female (2 x med, 1 x XL) in teal green and 1 male (large) vee neck in dark grey. First persons to offer Rita a tenner at the club will secure.

Seasearch talk

Chris Wood from Seasearch will be giving us a talk on Monday 1st Feb. Seasearch is an extremely useful project which allows divers to learn more about the life they encounter underwater and perform surveys to give ecologists information about the state of life in the sea.

The talk will be at 7:15 pm in 18 Victoria Park Square (before that evening's pool session). If it goes well I hope to arrange some of us to do Seasearch training and dives this season. A flyer is attached and you can find out more about seasearch here http://www.seasearch.co.uk/

Flyer : http://www.hackneydiving.org/system/files/hackneyflyer.jpg

Octopush

After the talk we're having one of our famous Octopush sessions. The game starts in the pool at 8:30pm, so arrive a bit earlier if you're not going to the talk. All you'll need is fins, a mask and gloves if you have them. It's great fun for all so come along!

Developing Self-Sufficiency

Michele will be giving a talk on 'Developing Self-Sufficiency' at 19:30 Monday 8th Feb in the back room of The Approach pub. This is a must for any diver who wants to improve their skills.
