Xmas Break -19th December 2004

This is just to let you all know that there will be no more pool sessions from now until Monday 10th January 2005. Have a good xmas and new year!

Membership Questionnaire - 15th November 2004

Can all members of the club please fill out the membership questionnaire to ensure that we have your correct details. This will help the expeditions and training officers plan next years training. It is also essential to maintain up-to-date contact and next of kin details.

Click here for a PDF form which can be printed out and posted or here for the same thing in a Word Document (Which can be filled in and emailed).

Please email or post the form to Julie at julie.lintunen @ ubs.com or 20 Picardy Road, Belvedere, Kent, DA17 5QH.

Dive Schedule for 2005 - 15th November 2004

Dive Newquay 2005 - 9 October 2004

I'm hoping to arrange a long weekend or two next year, diving from Atlantic Diver out of Newquay  http://www.atlanticdiver.co.uk

First dives will be wrecks in 30m+ (max. 45m). Two weekends are currently available. If you are interested in 3 to 4 days diving over either of these weekends, please let me know (details below).

Costs: based on 4 days diving/B&B will be in the region of £208 per weekend. Once confirmed that there is sufficient interest, I will need to collect deposits to secure the weekends. I need to do this before the end October. Atlantic Diver bookings have gone mad recently, due to lots of publicity this year regarding new wreck finds and weekends are going fast. An initial deposit of £80 per person per weekend is required ASAP. Please make cheques payable to J Lintunen and send to me at 20 Picardy Road, Belvedere, Kent, DA17 5QH.

A further deposit will be collected in the New Year, followed by the balance approx 8 weeks before the weekend in question. These wreck dives are deeper than club averages. If you are unsure whether you are suitably qualified/equipped to undertake this kind of diving, please ask me.

Extra Weymouth Trip on 25th/26th September - 18 August 2004

I am now taking bookings for Weymouth on 25th / 26th September.  We will be diving from a brand new Offshore 125 with a lift on the back (similar to Divetime, for anyone on the earlier Weymouth trips this year – although probably bigger).  We will be in the company of Woody who is arguably one of Weymouth ’s most colourful skippers, and a top bloke too – Hackney used to dive with him many years ago!  The diving will typically be wrecks in the 30-40m range for the first dive and a drift for the second.  I will also try and organise accommodation for all people on the trip which is usually in one of the small B&Bs just a few mins from the boat.

This is probably the last trip of 2004 so book now to avoid disappointment!!  Should go without saying but Weymouth is always excellent diving – arguably the dive capital of the UK !

NB: I will not be able to come on this dive myself – oddly enough I am also in Weymouth that weekend, doing some trimix diving on Skin Deep.  This means I need a Marshall and Assistant Marshall nominated in advance and briefed by me re: trip procedures etc.  Great opportunity to practice marshalling skills for a Dive Leader (for the Marshall ) and Sports Diver (for the Assistant Marshall). Anyone wanting to fulfil these roles, please let me know.

NNB:  This dive is for Sports Divers and above.  To avoid any misunderstandings this means people who have Sports Diver fully signed off in their log books NOT people who have nearly done it or are waiting to take the test.  (Sorry to be pedantic folks but it’s all in the interests of running safe trips and enjoying ourselves!!)

If you need anymore info on the trip, drop me an email expeditions @ hackneydiving.org .

Otherwise sign up by email – usual rules apply – first come, first served.

Safe diving!

Farnes Details, 20-22nd August - 16 August 2004

For you newcomers:

We're diving with Lee and Stan Hall. We've also booked accommodation with them.  Accommodation is B&B in twin or double en-suite rooms for £20 per night. Their website is:

http://www.farnedivingservices.co.uk/

The site has a map of how to get to the accommodation which is in Beadnell. We get there on Thursday and have breakfast at 8am on Friday.

We have 2 dives per day. We don't come back in at lunch time so have to take our own lunch. There's a shop nearby where you can get sandwiches.

Also, you need 2 cylinders if you're going to do 2 dives as we don't come back in to fill them again. Try to turn up on Thursday with full cylinders.

We're out on the boat for around 6 hours. We dive from Seahouses which is about a 5-10 minute drive from Beadnell. Parking at the harbour costs £2 per day.

Reminder: You will need to take 2 tanks up to the Farnes. Tank hire is £2.50 per day from the club (there is an additional charge of 2.50 for each cylinder that is not returned full). Also, if you need to hire other pieces of equipment, they are £2.50 per day as well.

Training Update - 29 July 2004

A few training bits and pieces that may affect you;

Ocean Divers;
The series of Ocean Diver Lectures will be repeated, starting with Lecture 2 on 9th August, Lecture 3 on 16th August, etc. Each lecture will be given ONLY if at least one person calls me BY PHONE at least 5 days beforehand. If not the week will remain blank. Don't forget the Bank Holiday.

Ocean Divers/Instructors;
Michele is to offer an Open Water Training day on the weekend of 7th or (preferably) 8th August, probably at Stoney Cove - inland, no boats, waves, etc. Please PHONE ME ASAP if you want to go. A further day is proposed later in August, with probably one more before the end of the season. Don't complain later if you don't take up the offers. Instructors - we really need commitment from you to assist with at least one of these days.

Dive Leaders - Can we have your weekend dates to avoid so that a PRM course can be run. This will help you achieve heady D/L status. Also any of you going to Farnes/Pembrokeshire let me know what you need to finish off for your D/L qualification.

Sports Divers - If you need more skills training , let me know. Otherwise get your books out and study for the test. No more assumption of boat diving after the Farnes unless you are a qualified S/D.

Cheers, Rob Wilkins

Pembrokshire Dive Update - 26 July 2004

The rest of you can fight it out amongst yourselves!

We have 2 boats for the weekend which I will split based on preferences / experience.  We’ve never been to Pembrokeshire before so have a look on the site and see what you fancy doing. Naturally weather conditions / skipper / Expeditions Officer will have the final call (in that order!)

As for the rest of you poor souls not making the trip, click on the link to see what you are missing.  If anyone still wants to book -the boats can take 2 more although I’d need to check if there is accommodation for you.

Any questions give me a call during the week 07900 321835 If the weather is looking crap next week, I suggest you call me Thurs before setting off!

Look forward to seeing you all there Thursday evening

Safe diving!

Dive Show

I'm still taking names and £7 for group tickets to the dive show (27th and 28th March) until next Mon night then I got to send off for the tickets - your saving £2.50 each (& kids under 12 are only £2 each in) and we're getting a gang to go together for a bit of craic - and maybe try the rebreather 'try-dive' this year! The tickets are valid for either day.

Give me an email (paulconnaughton @ murphygroup.co.uk) or a call 0773 672 8052 if you can't get down the pool Mon night next but still want a ticket.
